Nope. Integrity matters
I define “bullshit” as “people and ideas that exploit or manipulate others’ willingness to believe things that just aren’t so”. I’ve seen way too much of it in my time, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’ve fallen for my fair share of it over the decades.
There are a lot of things that I don’t do as a coach because having integrity is important to me. This article is not a list of my achievements or other great qualities (if you’re looking for that, go here); rather, this is a list of qualities that should be basic prerequisites for any coach worth your time.
I’m not the author of 10 books that all have pictures of me on the cover in front of a white background slathered with praise quotes from talk-show hosts like every other self-help book.
I don’t do “motivational” speaking events.
I’m not doing anything “revolutionary”.
I don’t promise overnight, easy solutions or guarantee any specific result. Most of the results that you will see from working with a great coach will be entirely up to you. I can guarantee you that if you do the work, you will see progress and results. You’ll get more done with a coach than without, because then you have a “partner in crime”, and with a coach, you never have to be alone.
I haven’t learned from “the masters”.
No one can induce change in you; but I can help you figure out how to change.
I don’t offer “abundance”, “enlightenment”, “financial freedom”, “healing”, “wellness”, or “fulfillment”.
I don’t do “programming” or “reprogramming”
I won’t attempt to be your doctor or your therapist; I’m not qualified to do either.
I have never seen convincing evidence that crystals, astrology, or anything else related to “transformational journey” woo are worth my time or money.
I know that believing what we hear from others – even those we trust – about current events, history, science, religion, or politics, without corroborating it with at least one reliable, authoritative source if that information is ever going to be a factor in any important decision we make or belief that we have, is a really bad idea.
I know the difference between “your” and “you’re”, and you can take that as evidence that I notice the “small things” that a great coach should, like shifts in tone of voice or language.
I’m pretty sure that at this point you know how I feel about “manifestation” and the “law of attraction”.
My struggles with chronic pain and tinnitus were often lonely experiences in that empathy and practical solutions were scarce from those closest to me, as well as from some healthcare professionals. As someone who understands not just the surface problems but the deep-seated battles that come with these issues and others, I now offer the support I once desperately needed. Your battles can be won, and sustainable change is possible. While I won’t guarantee success because that depends primarily on the work that you do in and beyond coaching sessions, you can expect that for the duration of our working relationship, I will be personally committed to helping you achieve sustainable goals that are important to you.
